Genesis Shelter

The vision of Genesis - A New Life is to enable the families of homeless newborns to move from homelessness to self-sufficiency by making a range of services available.   Genesis seeks to provide services that are comprehensive, and these services whether provided by Genesis or through collaboration include counseling, support, education, mental health, child development, aftercare and transitional programs.

The comprehensive nature of the Genesis program, developed over years of service to homeless newborns and their families, has enabled the creation of a blueprint that others may use to replicate the Genesis program wherever it may be needed.

Some of the various opportunities available include:

Play Group: This is our most popular volunteer opportunity for you or a group to let out the inner child in you. This is a great opportunity to for parents with young children to participate. It is a good way to get your children involved in volunteering. Play Groups are every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, & Thursday from 6:30-8:00 pm. It is for our school age children 2 years to 12 years old. It is an opportunity for volunteers to play with our children while our parents attend a support class.  Activities included are foreign language class, arts & crafts, music, story time & much more.

Tutoring: Assist in developing good study habits for our children.  Help children with their homework or special projects, or assist a small group of children with reading and math skills.  Tutoring times are available after school.  Be a friend and role model to one of our school – aged children and help them with their homework and / or study skills. We also have adults working on their GED.

Child Care: Our Child Development Center has openings for loving, caring people to help feed and rock infants and to play with preschoolers two to three hours per week.  You must be at least 16 years old to volunteer in the Child Development Center.  Various shifts are available in the nursery and preschool during Child Development Center hours.

Mentoring: We are in need of caring and committed individuals or families, that would like to develop a long term relationship with one of our families.  This would begin while at Genesis, and continue after the family leaves Genesis Shelter.  This would require one to two hours of communication per week, and face to face meetings at least one time per month.  This program leaves room for individuality.  Please contact us for more details.

Clothing Sorter:
Genesis is looking for volunteers to come help sort through clothing donations once a week. This includes folding & placing clothes in designated areas for residents to sort through them, also hauling items that we can’t use to the Salvation Army or Goodwill.

IT Volunteer: Genesis is looking for volunteers in the IT industries to help maintain upkeep of our resident computer lab.

Meal Preparation:
We always welcome groups that would like to provide/prepare a meal and host a weekend brunch or dinner at the shelter for our families.

Diapers & Baby Wipes Drive:  If you don’t have time to come to Genesis to volunteer, this is a great project for an office, sorority, club, or social network to do. Genesis serves 30 families per day and with your help we can continue to provide the basic needs for our families.
