  • After-school program, 5 days a week, 3:30 to 5:30 pm
  • Tutors work in small groups with elementary school children for one hour on homework help, then work with middle schoolers for second hour or assist with enrichment for second hour (math, science & technology, art, music, fitness)

Cobb County Community Services Boad

Cobb County Community Services Board and Douglas County Community Services Board are the public agencies that provide services to persons with mental health and addictive diseases and developmental disabilities in our community.  We serve more than 13,000 individuals a year--adults, adolescents and children--in residential, day treatment, and outpatient settings.

Volunteer projects:

  • Prepare goody bags for Valentine's Day
  • Prepare Easter baskets
  • Collect game prizes and incentive awards (such as puzzles, games, backpacks, school supplies, $5 gift cards, etc.)
  • Sort donated canned goods and/or pack Thanksgiving baskets (this activity takes place at the adult mental health center located in Austell, the Saturday or Sunday before Thanksgiving)
  • Adopt a family at Christmas
  • Collect toiletry items for adults with mental health disabilities
  • Assist with craft classes for adults with developmental disabilities

Placement Call Specialist

Objective:
To make telephone calls to Career Center participants in order to document employment and to track the participant's progress in his/her employment search.

Major responsibilities:
Make telephone calls to Career Center participants.  Document the participant's employment search by completing a call log.  Note the participants registration form if employment has been secured.  Inform supervisor of trends in customer calls.

Qualifications:
Relate well to people, have a pleasant telephone voice, ability to listen, read and write, and the ability to comprehend oral and written instructions.

Training required:
Volunteer orientation by Volunteer Coordinator, assigned supervisor, and staff.

Time and place:
Flexible time (2 hour minimum per week)

VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) Volunteer

Objective:
To provide free income tax preparation for low to moderate income level clients.  Use knowledge of federal, state, and local tax codes and publications to either screen tax payers, prepare returns, and/or quality review the prepared return to ensure that the taxpayer does not pay undue taxes and receives appropriate credits.

Major responsibilities:
Complete all training on Tax Wise software and pass the Internal Revenue Service examination to become a certified income tax preparer.  Upon completion and certification, use this knowledge and skill to assist clients with basic to intermediate income tax preparation.

Qualifications:
Applicants must have a high school diploma as well as thorough knowledge of tax laws and proficiency in math and computer applications.  Must become certified through the Internal Revenue Service prior to the beginning of the tax season.

Training required:
Must complete Tax Wise and VITA training through the Internal Revenue Service and pass the IRS certification exam with a score of 80% of above; volunteer orientation by Volunteer Coordination, assigned supervisor, and staff.

Time and place:
Flexible time (2 hour minimum per week)

Computer Support Assistant

Objective:

  • Assist the Volunteer Facilitator in assisting job seekers with resume preparation, Internet access, and general computer use that will enable customers to obtain employment in the community.
Major responsibilities:
  • Assist walk-in clients with resume and cover letter formatting, job/information searches using the Internet, faxing, photocopying, giving directions, assisting with recruitment fairs and activities, and orienting clients to the Career Center.
Qualifications:
  • Applicants should relate well to people, have a high school diploma and be familiar with basic computer programs such as Microsoft Word and Win Way Resume Deluxe, or the ability to learn such programs.  Also, applicant should have the ability to listen and comprehend customer's verbal requests, pay attention to detail, read, write and comprehend business language.  Good grammar and spelling is a plus.
Training required:
  • Volunteer orientation by Volunteer Coordinator, supervisor, and staff. 
Time and place:
  • Flexible time (2 hour minimum per week)

The Literacy for Youth Foundation

Volunteers are needed in children's hospitals, shelters, local libraries, recreation centers, classroom settings, and more!  Serve as a tutor, mentor, friend, and much more.
