Literacy Action

There are a number of ways you can volunteer and become involved with Literacy Action.  Volunteers help us keep our operating expenses down and further our students’ involvement in their education.
Literacy Action needs volunteers year round. Contact Becky Lyons at blyons@literacyaction.org or (404) 818-7334 for more information about the process.  Training and time commitments vary depending on the volunteer role. Our priority is to match your skills and interests with the specific classroom needs.
Specific volunteer opportunities include:
  • Classroom Assistant – Assist instructors in reading, math, work skills, GED, and computer courses.  Work with small groups or individual students, monitor classroom activities and grade papers.
  • Tutor students in small group settings or individually in reading, math, GED coursework and writing.
  • Computer Lab / Learning Lab Instructor or assistant to help students with GED software, reading, writing and math and direct them to learning resources.
  • Workshops for students in areas of financial literacy, health and wellness, women’s and children’s issues, job interview preparedness and resume writing.
  • Administrative assistance.
  • Event planning and fundraising – Help in development efforts to support increased class offerings and free classes for more students.
  • Special event speakers.
